The Buck
Inn at Maunby is as
beautiful, cheerful, pretty hostelry as you will ever find, nestling in one of the quietest corners of
North Yorkshire, the largest county in England.
Maunby is
tucked away, off the main road, and is a relative rarity - a village at the end
of a long country lane that leads to one place only - Maunby.
It is true
that the village of Pickhill is only a (good) stone's throw away, but you would
have to throw the stone over the River Swale!
Situated
roughly 5 miles from Thirsk, Northallerton and Bedale, Maunby's quietness is not
very far away from "civilization", as each of these very pleasant market towns
is within easy reach, either by car or public transport.
Phil and
Margaret have transformed the Buck from the nice country inn it was when they
took over to a top quality establishment which specialises in delicious food and
a very wide selection of drinks, be they beer, lager, spirits or wines.
In the
colder months, there is a simply gorgeous log fire to keep you warm. The
furnishings are of a very high quality. The ambience is, in a word, cosy.
One or two "different" things that happen at the Buck -
-
Our Chef, Joey, is very
experienced, and his dishes are mouth-wateringly good. If you have the ability
to eat a (pre-booked) 40 oz Rump Steak, together with the plateful of potatoes,
vegetables etc that come with it, you get it free of charge. We also say (with
tongue in cheek) that we will help you get up from the table, and carry you to
your car / house.
-
You may
not have heard of the sport called "Quoits". It is a game where a solid ring of
metal is deftly thrown a distance of 11 yards, with the intention of it
landing around a pin which protrudes from the middle of a square yard of clay..
It is, perhaps, much more subtle than that, but it is still an undeniably
popular game in these parts, as witnessed by the attendances at the league
matches in which the Buck's team play. All part of the fun of coming to this
idyllic hideaway.
